Three serious crashes on Route 1 in the Rehoboth area last weekend killed a pedestrian and a driver and severely injected a bicyclist. Because of those crashes, Delaware State Police are now reminding motorists, bicyclists, and motorcyclists of safe practices on First State roads.

State Police say motorists should be extra cautious on weekends when more bicyclists and motorcyclists are on the road and never try to share a lane with a bicycle or motorcycle.

If you are a bicyclist - police say you should always obey the rules of the road, including observing traffic signals and stop signs and never ride against the flow of traffic.

Police say visibility can be an issue for bicyclists in the dark. White front lights and red backlights, plus reflective tape or reflective clothing can help make bicycles more visible. It is against Delaware law to operate a bicycle at night without a front headlight.

State Police also note that motorcyclists can prevent crashes and injuries by maintaining Safer speeds, keeping headlights, marker and tail lights on at dusk and in the dark or rainy weather and staying three to four seconds behind a vehicle they intend to pass.
