As the weather warms, drivers and pedestrians can meet more and more groups of road users - cyclists and scooters. Cyclists are happy to start the season earlier, but important rules to keep in mind before leaving home.
Company archive First of all, before the trip, every driver of a bicycle or electric scooter must make sure that their vehicle is in good technical condition: it has working brakes, an audible signal, a white headlight, and a red rear light. There should also be orange reflectors on the spokes of the bike. Visible and safe When traveling on the carriageway, every cyclist and scooter must take care of their safety and allow car drivers to see them by wearing a brightly colored vest with reflective tapes. If this element can be replaced by vehicle lights when it is bright during the day - white at the front, red at the rear, then both during the day (or in poor visibility) both headlights and a vest are needed.
Another very important attribute is a safety helmet. Road users under the age of 18 must wear a helmet when riding a bicycle or scooter on the carriageway. Helmets are recommended for older road users, as head injuries are the most dangerous.
The Road Traffic Regulations (KET) stipulate that drivers of electric scooters are classified as cyclists and, like the latter, must ride on cycle paths, cycle and pedestrian paths, or bike lanes. Where there are none - a suitable curb (with asphalt or concrete pavement). When it is not possible to drive on a cycle path or curb (pothole and the like), it is allowed to drive on the sidewalk or in one row in the right-hand traffic lane of the carriageway, as close as possible to its right edge.
Focus on pedestrians Still, scooters should avoid driving on the sidewalks. If there is no alternative but to ride on the sidewalk, scooters and cyclists should keep a greater distance from pedestrians, ride slower, and avoid warning people that they are nearby and, if necessary, even stop completely so that the pedestrian is not caught or injured. Scooter and bicycle drivers should remember that they should move slowly on foot, at the speed at which people walk. It is emphasized that this speed is approximately 3-7 km / h. Also, scooters and cyclists should not obstruct pedestrians and, when passing by, leave a space that is safe for all road users. Pedestrians, especially after a winter break, can get scared near the electric scooter, suddenly change direction and thus demolish the driver of the electric scooter. Police officers have recorded several cases where scooters not only injure themselves but also injure pedestrians. Persons not less than 14 years of age are allowed to ride a bicycle or electric scooter on the carriageway, and persons not less than 12 years of age have attended a training course set by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports and have a school certificate. If adults are traveling together, younger road users are also allowed to drive on the carriageway, but they must still not be under 8 years old.
Go by yourself and miss others by driving them. Only when they reach the other side of the road can these road users continue their journey while driving.
In cases where the carriageway is to be crossed where a cycle path is marked by two parallel lines consisting of squares, scooters and cyclists may cross the road without disembarking from their vehicles. However, this can only be done if you are sure it is safe and the cars are passing them. Road users traveling by bicycle should also remember that when a cycle path crosses a pedestrian crossing, cyclists and scooters must give way to pedestrians and not obstruct or endanger them.
