The amendment will probably be effective in the spring, says Transport Minister Dan Wok in launching a campaign to increase pedestrian safety. Reflective tapes will also be handed out by the police. It promises that even after the introduction of the new duty, people will talk rather than fine them.
Prague - Pedestrians will probably not have the obligation to wear reflective vests on roads for reduced visibility as early as January 2016, as proposed by the Ministry of Transport. "It could start to apply in the spring," Minister Dan Wok expects. The amendment to the Road Traffic Act, which contains this news item, is waiting for a third reading in the Chamber of Deputies, after which the Senate will still deal with it and must be signed by the President.
The ministry, or its BESIP organization, today launched a campaign to increase pedestrian safety on the back roads and reduced visibility. There are TV clips with the actor Zeneca, in which pedestrians work to use reflexive elements.
"By the end of next year we will give them in schools and other places half a million," said Martin Farrar, head of BESIP. About thirty million crowns from the Damage Fund are earmarked for the campaign.
About one hundred deaths on Czech roads, according to the Ministry, are attributable to pedestrians and cyclists who have not been seen.
"Last week, during the mild rain, a group of pedestrians walked along the road of a very busy road, and when we first went without reflective tapes, we had to jump out of the road occasionally, otherwise we would seriously threaten a crash with a passing vehicle. They put on the ribbons, suddenly the drivers began to give a sign of a change of direction and were able to slow down because they knew us a lot earlier, "says Farrar.
Reflective tapes will also be handed out by the police. "The amendment will allow us to find the pedestrian without reflective materials, but rather to make police officers talk to the pedestrians. In practice, it could look like a police patrol who sees a person without a reflection on the road outside the village at night, he talks to him and gives him one tape, "said Tomah Larch, head of the traffic police.
