Don't want to spend your vacation on the crowded beaches in the heat? Are you more attracted to the Alps, which are easily accessible from us and are interested in their renowned services? Before you pack everything you need and get in the car, don't forget to check the mandatory equipment you must have in Austria.
Austrian regulations regarding mandatory equipment are less stringent in Austria than in our country. But aren't you very sure that you follow them one hundred percent? Before going abroad with your car, it is always better to check and remember what you need to have with you. And what can save your life as a result?
The new first aid kit is the basis
In Austria, as in our country, it is mandatory to drive a first aid kit, which must not be violated in any way. It must therefore be packed in the original packaging to prevent dirt from entering the contents of the first-aid kit. However, unlike us, Austria does not have precisely defined content. Purchasing a first-aid kit approved by ÖAMTC is only recommended by law, not mandatory. However, it is mandatory to have everything needed in the car to treat common wounds.
Take the vest with you
In the case where it is necessary to pay attention to more than one car, it is necessary to have two other things in the mandatory equipment - that is a warning triangle and a reflective vest. As with us, if you have to stop a vehicle on the side of the road, it is your responsibility to let others know about the obstacle. The warning triangle must be placed at least 50 meters behind the car, 100 meters on the highway. The reflective vest is mandatory for the driver, it is recommended for others in the car. Red, yellow and orange vests comply with the law. Fines for non-compliance with this regulation are high. Also, it is possible to get a sanction twice, for the absence of a vest and for not being used. The fine can climb over 2,000 euros!
To the mountains with chains
For passenger cars, if the winter conditions (snow, ice, icing) are between 1 November and 15 April, the vehicle can only be used if it has winter tires or snow chains on the drive axle wheels. However, snow chains also have an exception, they can be used on the road if the surface is covered with a continuous layer of snow or ice, and if their use does not damage the road. If you drive without chains, expect a fine on the spot of up to 35 euros, blocking the traffic will cost you up to 5000 euros. The minimum tread depth in summer is 1.6 mm, on winter tires must be at least 4 mm. Usually, the use of winter tires is associated with a speed limit of 50 km / h. Studded tires are also permitted, but they may not be used in our country, so we can only find them on cars from an Austrian car rental company.
What else in the end?
If you are not the owner of the vehicle in which you are driving, you must have a confirmation of the rental of the vehicle in addition to the usual documents. Fog lights must not be lit all the time, their use is limited to fog, heavy rain, and snow. The ban on making calls without a hands-free kit behind the wheel is a matter of course. Mandatory seat belts as if. You can also get a fine on the highway for staying too long in the left lane. If you take a car camera with you to the car, be careful. It is prohibited in Austria to protect the privacy of others. You may use it only for your use, but the recording may not be provided to a third party.
