Electric scooters, monowheels, gyropods, hoverboards ... Since July 8, 2020, motorized personal transport vehicles (EDPM) are subject to new rules. Horn, front and rear brakes, and lighting are now mandatory.
After being introduced into the highway code last fall, the use of personal motorized vehicles (EDPM) is governed by new rules from July 8, 2020.
Electric scooters, monowheels, gyropods, and hoverboards must now be fitted with front and rear position lights, as well as retro-reflective devices (reflectors), a braking system, and a horn.
Equipment already recommended
Until now, only the wearing of a helmet was "recommended" but not compulsory in built-up areas or on greenways and cycle paths. At night or during the day with insufficient visibility, and even in built-up areas, users of these devices must wear retro-reflective equipment (for example a safety vest, an armband, etc.) with a total surface area of at least 150 cm 2.
If it is not integrated into the garment from the start, the equipment is worn on the upper body, except the helmet, from the waistband and down to the line of the shoulders, to be visible to other pedestrians and drivers. Also, it is possible to wear a light on the chest, back, arm, or a combination of these elements. This equipment must be non-glare and non-flashing.
Furthermore, when the machine does not have a handlebar, the driver must be fitted with an additional front and a rear lighting device.
Fines planned
While the lack of "effective braking" is punishable by a fine of € 11, the amount of the fine in the absence of lighting or sound alarm climbs to € 35 and even to € 135 for those who ride on a sidewalk. Finally, the sanction provided for those who exceed 25 km / h on public roads with an unbridled scooter is € 1,500.
It should be remembered that it is forbidden to wear earphones or any device likely to emit sound, or to use the telephone held in your hand, to be with others on the machine, or to drive under the influence. alcohol.
Driving an EDPM is prohibited for anyone under the age of 12.
In town, it is compulsory to ride on cycle tracks and lanes when there are any and, outside urban areas, traffic is only allowed on greenways and cycle paths.
