2019 was the year that marked a step forward for the legal recognition of micro-mobility in Italy. The electric scooters - experienced great difficulty through sharing services - have been equated to bicycles. 2020 could become the first year in which these green vehicles begin to spread also thanks to the mobility bonus just launched by the government. Therefore, for those who have already bought or intend to buy a scooter for their daily trips, here is a simple guide to use in the city with what can be done and what cannot be done.

Scooter: cycle paths and roads

The coexistence between bicycles and scooters is not always easy in our cities, especially since there are few true bike-friendly infrastructures with easy access for many users. Those who drive an electric scooter can circulate both on cycle paths and on urban roads where the speed limit is set at 50 km / h. If in your municipality the administration has published a resolution that favors the use of these vehicles, it is also possible to move within pedestrian areas where, however, it is necessary to maintain a maximum speed of 6 km / h.

As with the bicycle, there is no obligation to wear a helmet. Those who travel by scooter cannot ride on the pavements and, at night, must wear a reflective vest and turn on the lights. All these rules do not apply only to those who have decided to convert to micro-mobility by purchasing a vehicle: prohibitions and permits are also valid for those who instead aim to subscribe to one of the many sharing services active in many cities, where the number of so-called active users of the road is increasing also in light of weakened public transport.
